Agate Beach State Recreation Site is a small recreation area located on Oregon's central coast near the town of Newport. The park is a favorite among surfers, clammers and rockhounds alike. Many gem hunters come out after winter storms hoping to find agates patterned with red, yellow or blue hues.
Agate Beach offers beach access and popular activities such as water sports, picnicking, fishing, clam digging and surfing. The Park is a great place to stop in for a picnic while visiting other Newport attractions such as nearby Oregon Coast Aquarium and Hatfield Marine Science Center, If you are searching for clams in the sand for dinner, the clamming is best at low tide. The Park also has a great view of the historic Yaquina Head lighthouse. Area birds, which roost at Yaquina Head, include the tufted puffin, cormorant, common murre, and pigeons guillemots.
