Connetquot River State Park Preserve is a conservation area in Oakdale, New York. The Park is a preserve that maintains over 3,400 acres of land and water for the protection and propagation of many bird species, deer, and numerous rare plants. The Connetquot River flows right through the park which is home to waterfowl, osprey, game birds, deer, and numerous rare plants such as trailing arbutus and pyxie moss in their natural habitats. The largest state park on Long Island, Connetquot is an oasis that provides visitors a break from the surrounding urban activity. The preserve also has 50 miles of hiking, horseback riding, cross-country ski and nature trails, as well as fishing on the Connetquot River.
Visitors can enjoy activities that have low impact on conservation programs (no pets allowed). The park offers hiking, fishing, a bridle path, nature trails, cross-country skiing, snow shoeing, a museum, and recreation activities. The park provides excellent opportunities for fishing brook, brown and rainbow trout, with some trout being as much as 15 pounds.
The Park has a bridle path, a gift shop, a museum/visitor center, and a nature trail. Seasons/Operating Hours: The preserve operates year round. Restrictions: No pets allowed. A permit is required for entrance to the park. The permit can be obtained free by writing to the Long Island State Parks in Babylon, NY. The park is a carry-in carry-out facility. There are no garbage bins along the trails. Additionally there are no picnic facilities or play areas for children. Location: From western Long Island: Southern State Parkway east to exit 44 (Sunrise Highway), east to the Preserve. From eastern Long Island: Sunrise Highway west to Oakdale.
