Chimney Bluffs State Park is a state park located in the town of Huron, New York on Lake Ontario, on the eastern shore of Sodus Bay. The park offers visitors unique views of large clay formations at the water’s edge that transform the landscape into razor-sharp pinnacles. Visitors can experience massive earthen spires rising from the lakeshore. The impressive pinnacles and cliffs can rise up to 150 feet from the lake shore. The cliffs present a changing panorama since the average erosion of the bluffs is three feet per year. The Lake Ontario shoreline from Sodus Bay to Oswego has many bluffs, including popular Chimney Bluffs.
The Chimney Bluffs area has been a landmark for many years. Operated informally as a privately owned recreation area for many years, the area was eventually acquired by the state of New York in 1963 and soon named a state park.
Visitors can see the dramatic landscape on the Lake Ontario shore. At some vantage points in the Park, visitors can see Nine Mile Point nuclear power station, 25 miles to the northeast. The Park has four miles of hiking trails, including a mile-long trail along the Bluffs from the West entrance to the East entrance. Popular activities include fishing, hiking, hunting, and picnicking. Winter activities include snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing.
Day-use services include picnic areas, nature trails and restrooms. Seasons/Operating Hours: Open year round from dawn to dusk. Restrictions: Household pets only; caged or on a leash not more than 6 feet. Proof of rabies inoculation. Because of the unpredictability of the erosion of the cliffs, the public is warned against hiking close to the edge. Location: From Route 104: travel north on Bluff Rd. to the park entrance off Garner Rd. Contact Information: 7700 Garner Road Wolcott, NY 14590 (315) 947-5205
