The Catharine Valley Trail is a 12-mile, multi-use trail that will connect Watkins Glen State Park and Mark Twain State Park in the Southern Tier of New York State when completed. The trail follows portions of abandoned Northern Central Railroad and Chemung Canal towpath corridors in New York's Finger Lakes region and provides visitors a great way to experience the scenic beauty and historic charm of the valley south of Seneca Lake. This year round recreation trail follows abandoned railroad, canal towpath corridors, passes through a variety of wildlife habitats and mature hardwood forest with oak, hickory, and maple.
The crushed-limestone trail surface accommodates walking, bicycling, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The trail passes several marshes, including the Queen Catharine Marsh Wildlife Management Area. The Marsh is an important stop for many species of migratory birds. Some of the stone headwalls from the locks in this area are still in good condition. The exposed 100- to 200-foot-high rock cliffs on the western side of the corridor are outstanding.
The trail spans Schuyler and Chemung counties, passing through the communities of Watkins Glen, Montour Falls, Millport, and Pine Valley to Horseheads. Seasons/Operating Hours: Open year round from dawn to dusk. Restrictions: Household pets only; caged or on a leash not more than 6 feet. Not allowed in bathing areas. Current rabies certificate is required. Location: Access points are located off NYS Route 14, one in the Town of Montour and one in the Village of Millport.
