Location Overview

Camp Hero State Park is a former a military base located at Montauk Point on the eastern tip of Long Island, New York. The park contains 415 acres of diverse landscape that includes heavily wooded areas, freshwater wetlands, ocean vistas, dramatic bluffs, a long expanse of beachfront along the Atlantic Ocean, and a historic military installation.

Visitors to Camp Hero State Park enjoy panoramic views of the Atlantic while the steep bluffs that arise from the sandy beach evoke awe and inspiration to many. Camp Hero is more than just a wildlife reserve with diverse landscapes; it also holds a special place in the history of the United States.

Activities and Attractions

The pristine maritime forests, freshwater wetlands, and dramatic bluffs rising from the beach provide for an abundance of activities and attractions at Camp Hero.

The park has an extensive system of trails to challenge hikers, cyclists, and those who choose to explore on horseback. Cross-country skiing is possible in the winter season.

The park boasts some of the best surf fishing locations in the world. Open 24 hours a day to fishermen with permits, it is said to be the best spot on earth for the sport. Surfing is also available with a permit.

The undisturbed environment at Camp Hero shelters abundant wildlife and a large variety of birds. Birders have ample opportunities to make many varied sightings here in a day. There are also many other animals that dwell within the temperate woodlands.

The former military base located at the park is registered as a National Historic Site.

History

Camp Hero, also known as Fort Hero or the Montauk Air Force Base, was a military base at Montauk Point on the eastern tip of Long Island, New York. Decommissioned in the 1980s, it is now owned by the New York State Department of Parks as Camp Hero State Park.

Seasons/Hours:
Open year-round, seven days a week from sunrise to sunset.

Location:
Route 27 (Sunrise Highway) east to the end. The park is approximately 130 miles from New York City.
