Location Overview

On the Texas Panhandle near the Canadian River sits an almost surreal area where civilizations of old once lived. Covered with colorful flint, once used to make weapons and tools like arrowheads, the area is the only exposed source of Alibates flint in the country.

The 736 quarry pits located at this unique national monument were once integral to the lives of those who made their home here. Alibates flint, with its unique colors and sharp edges, was considered one of the best materials from which to fashion defensive weapons or early tools for everyday use. It is believed that the flint was used by early civilizations more than 12,000 years ago and as recently as the late 19th century.

The quarry pits sit on the hilltops overlooking the Canadian River and vary in size from about five to twenty-five feet across. Often, they were up to 10 feet deep though, from lack of use, many have filled with dust, dirt, and vegetation and are much shallower now.

The National Park Service welcomes guests to visit these fascinating flint quarries, but they can only be explored on ranger-led tours in order to protect the fragility of the area. Tours are a one-mile round trip and take about 2 hours to complete. The trail is moderately steep and often covered with loose gravel, so comfortable and sturdy shoes are necessary. Reservations can be made in advance.

Guests are free to hike in areas apart from the flint quarries and can also view wildlife around the monument, including wild turkeys, quail, roadrunners, deer, and antelope. Coyotes and bobcats are also present so caution is advised when wildlife exploring.

There is no lodging at the National Monument, but nearby Lake Meredith National Recreation Area provides campsites and a bevy of water activities. Other lodging is available in the towns of Fitch and Borger.

Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument is best visited in the fall, winter, or spring, when the Texas temperatures are not so hot.
